Kentucky Water Quantity & Policy
For much of Kentucky, concerns over the quantity of water available only arise during times of drought. Even though quantity concerns have not been a key issue for much of the state, legislation has been enacted that requires counties to assess their water supplies and plan for future growth in the demand for treated water. The Water Supply Planning Program required counties to develop an initial plan by July 1999. These plans are intended to be dynamic, and must be updated over time. The Kentucky Division of Water and the Area Development Districts provide technical assistance to local water supply planning committees.
To address water quantity issues, the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service has emphasized the need for and techniques and strategies for water conservation. Information about water conservation is available through the College of Agriculture Drought Information web site.
